Desk Project
Proposal
Summary
Mlimani Alumni
Organization (MAO) was founded in 2005 with the aim of bringing
together Mlimani Primary
School
alumni around the world and joining efforts to assist the school
and improve the learning environment for current students.
The school has
a shortage of 267 desks and as a result, some of the students
sit on the floor during lessons. MAO decided to be part of the
solution for this problem, which has faced Mlimani Primary
School
for many years. Consequently, ‘267’ Madawati (desks) Campaign
was launched.
The campaign
was launched with the aim of raising funds to purchase 267 needed
desks for Mlimani Primary
School
by October 2008.
800 students
will be given a chance to sit on a desk (not on the floor) and
comfortably participate in classroom activities.
This will eliminate the uncertainty that they encounter
every morning when they wonder, ‘where am I going to sit today
in the classroom’, just because they have no permanent desk to
depend on.
The organization
plans to accomplish the 267 desks campaign goal in 5 phases of
50, 50, 50, 50 and 67 desks respectively.
As of now, the
price per 1 desk (1 dawati) is about $70. Thus, the amount needed
to buy 267 desks is approximately $18,690.
Mlimani Alumni
Organization has already raised approximately $5,000 in cash for
the Madawati project. MAO has also received pledges for the project
amounting to approximately $2,740.
The organization
is working to raise the remaining $10,950 to cover the costs for
phase 2 through 5 of the Madawati project.
Your support will be greatly appreciated by the students
of Mlimani Primary
School as it provides them a better environment
for their Elementary education which is the foundation for a lifetime
of the search for knowledge.
Please help us spread the word to others; friends,
family, coworkers and well wishers who might be willing to support
the efforts of MAO, together we can make a difference.
Introduction
Who we are
Mlimani Alumni
Organization (MAO) was founded in 2005 with the aim of bringing
together Mlimani Primary
School
alumni around the world and joining efforts to assist the school
and improve the learning environment for current students.
The school is
located within the University of Dar es Salaam Mlimani campus in Tanzania, East
Africa.
The current
active members of the organization are former Mlimani Primary
School
students.
Our Mission Statement
The Mlimani
Alumni Organization seeks to reach, serve and engage all alumni
of Mlimani Primary
School
by:
1. Fostering
an intellectual connection among Mlimani alumni, and also
between alumni and the Mlimani Primary
School
2. Giving alumni
and Friends of Mlimani an opportunity to come together and provide
a goodwill support to Mlimani Primary
School.
3. Giving alumni
the opportunity for peer mentoring
4. Giving alumni
an opportunity to host events and have fun!
Our activities
The organization
is currently working on two projects concurrently, the Madawati
(Desks) and the Umeme (Electricity) Projects.
The target population
for the organization’s projects is the current Mlimani Primary
School
students and teachers while the target population for other organization
activities is both the Alumni and current students.
In April 2005,
MAO hosted an alumni reunion bbq-party in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and raised a total of Tshs. 450,000 in cash donations,
equivalent to approximately US $450 for the Umeme project. Additionally,
the organization has raised US $2,170 in cash also for the Electricity
Project. The Electricity
project has started with the wiring and cabling phase already
completed.
In November
2006, MAO hosted an alumni reunion in Ohio, US and raised a total of US $1,500 in cash donations
for the Madawati (Desks) project.
Also, the organization has raised US $3,500 in cash for
the Madawati Project, bringing the total cash donations to US
$5,000. The goal for desks stands at 267, which is
the current need for the school.
There are approximately
2000 students attending Mlimani Primary
School.
800 students
will benefit from the purchase of 267 desks.
Each desk that will be purchased will seat 3 students.
These desks
will help students sit comfortably, be able to pay attention to
the teacher, participate in classroom activities, be organized
and write their notes legibly instead of sitting down on the floor.
MAO’s goal is
to raise funds to purchase the 267 at the Mlimani Primary
School
by the end of the year 2008.
The organization
plans to break down the project into 5 phases.
The plan is to purchase 50 desks for each phase (1 through
4), and 67 desks for phase
5.
Goal – Purchase
267 desks
Benefit: The 267 desks will positively influence the
learning experience for these 800 children and motivate them to
go to school everyday. This
will help them avoid the uncertainty that confronts them each
morning wondering whether another student will miss school so
that they can have a place to sit simply because they have no
permanent desk to depend on.
The work involves
the services of a Carpenter and wood vendor.
The Carpenter
will make purchases of materials from the wood vendor and other
supplies under the supervision of a MAO officer.
The Carpenter
will then proceed to make 50 desks for phase 1 of the project
per specifications agreed upon on the contract between him and
MAO.
MAO will proceed
with the next phase dependent on satisfactory reports for the
preceding phase.
Below is the expected timetable for the project
divided into 4 phases.
